100m Sprint and Javelin set to be a battle of the giants

World’s greatest on the hunt for magical barriers on Whit Monday

All eyes will be on the men’s 100m and Javelin events on June 6th with exciting battles on the agenda at the FBK Games in Hengelo, the Netherlands. Former World Champion Yohan Blake from Jamaica will take on the current 200m Olympic Champion from Canada André De Grasse. Two sprinters who have seen the top step of international podiums many times throughout their careers. In the Javelin event 2017 World Champion Johannes Vetter will take on 2019 World Champion Anderson Peters.

Sprint battle Blake vs. De Grasse will be a quest for a sub 10-second race
Yohan Blake (32) was crowned the 100m world champion in 2011. Followed by Olympic silver medals on both the 100m and 200m the year after in London behind the unfathomable Usain Bolt. Blake won 2 gold Olympic medals alongside Bolt in the 4x100m Relay in London and Rio de Janeiro. He is still fast as ever given his current season best of 10.11. André de Grasse (27) was crowned the 200m Olympic Champion in Tokyo last year while winning a bronze Olympic medal on the 100m. De Grasse’s has finished a 10,07 race already this year but with a fraction too much wind from behind for the time to count as an official season’s best.

Both men have dipped below the magical 10-second line many times during their careers. Blake already secured a time of 9.69 seconds in 2012 while running the second fastest 200m in history ever in 2011 (19.26s). De Grasse ran his personal best in the 100 meters last year in 9.89s. Over 200 meters he came to 19.62s. The FBK Games meeting record of 9.95s dates to 2009 and was ran by Richard Thompson from Trinidad and Tobago. With good weather a race below 10 seconds is possible.

Javelin phenoms Vetter vs. Peters
The infield of the FBK Stadium will be the stage for the confrontation between Johannes Vetter from Germany and Anderson Peters from Grenada. Vetter (29) threw a fabulous 97,76m in 2020. Only living legend Jan Zelezny threw his javelin further in 1996 to a distance of 98,48m. Vetter was crowned world champion in 2017 at the World Championships in London. It was Anderson Peters who excelled last week in Doha during his first Diamond League event of the season. The 800-gram weighing spear of the 24-year-old world champion of 2019 flew to a distance of 93,07m. The FBK Games meeting record of 83,90m by former world champion Klaus Tafelmeier (GER) should normally not be a problem for these current Javelin stars.

Battles for the fans
Meeting Director Ellen van Langen: “We want to give our fans real battles on the different disciplines. That’s why I am so excited to see these incredible athletes do what they do best in both the 100m and Javelin events!”

Besides these four stars the FBK Games already announced Dafne Schippers (100m), Nadine Visser(100mH), Femke Bol (400mH), Lieke Klaver (400m), Liemarvin Bonevacia (400m) and World Record Holder Pole Vault Mondo Duplantis. The FBK Games is the only athletics event on the world stage in the Netherlands and is part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold. A series of 12 meets.
